Photography and Stress {cleveland family photographer}

While I was working over the weekend, my client Steve said he was talking with a friend and mentioned they were having family photos taken. The friend groaned and said, “Don’t tell my wife,”. I laughed—men not being “all in” when it comes to family photos is nothing new. There are even a good lot of women who opt out of being part of their family’s photos. But why is that? Why is there push back, when it comes time for those family photos?

Stress.

What’s the first thing you do, after signing your contract and submitting your retainer? If you’re like 97% of my clients, you start shopping or rummaging through dressers searching for The Perfect Outfit. While I’m guilty of this myself, I can’t quite understand why we stress about what to wear. Sure, we don’t necessarily want large prints of our kids with peanut butter on their faces, in their ratty sweat pants (my daughters haven’t worn jeans since Kindergarten) but does it *really* matter? I tell my clients, you do NOT need to be in your Sunday Best; clean pants or dresses, complimentary colors, weather appropriate and you’re all set. I’ve seen far too many moms work themselves into a tizzy, over pattern combinations, color coordination, hair and make up,  thoughts about their weight, and let’s not even get started with “will they behave or won’t they,”.

I want everyone considering me for their photography to know Pinterest Perfect is NOT real.  More important than everyone ‘sit-stay-smile-look’ is the genuine interaction. At one of my shoots over the weekend, this sweet little one picked up his shirt, and shared his belly with me. And I love that. I love it, because he was so comfortable, he was so happy, he was so three-years-old. I love that his siblings are all looking at me and that he is 100% toddler awesomeness.

TUMMY!

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, who do you find yourself snapping at most?  If you’re like me, it’s the very people you’re hoping to get those happy smiling photos with. They see you worried about things and in turn, it upsets them. Your spouse may see you getting upset and wonder why you do this every year which frustrates them, then you get even more frazzled because what the heck are THEY so worried about when you’re the one doing everything!? (sound familiar?)

Please believe me when I tell you, you do NOT need to worry about Picture Perfect. It’s ok if you all throw on something you already own. It’s ok to mix pattern and color. Pattern it up! See the above, the stripes and plaids and solids? It looks so good together! It’s ok, if your toddler shows me his tummy. It’s ok if you weigh more than you did, your freshman year of college. If you’ve not worked with me before, I’ll just tell you right now- my sessions never last more than 45 minutes. This gorgeous family of eight? Forty-five minutes. I can get smaller families done, in and out in 30 minutes, even if your toddler takes his shirt off. If your partner is on edge about “how long do we have to be here?” you can tell them, 45 minutes tops. 😉

When we chill out, accept that all things aren’t Pinterest Picture Perfect and realize THAT’S OK we find ourselves and those around us actually enjoying photo sessions. I promise, it’s going to be better than you think, so shed the stress and the worry. Just come, hang out. It’ll be good!

See? Having a good time! No worries!

It’s going to be better than you think {cleveland family photographer}

Corynn and Dan found their way to me, via referrals from two (!!) happy clients and I’m so glad they did. Their sweet boys, Dominic and Leo were a joy to photograph. Dan, like most men, came into the session with ideas about how it would go– and he was thinking it would not go well. No doubt, previous attempts at photos elsewhere hadn’t gone well.
I am very pleased to say, Dan left with a smile on his face, as did his handsome little fellas and his lovely wife ❤

When we met Cameron {cleveland newborn photographer}

They say there are very few mysteries in life. Kristen and Chris decided that learning the sex of their baby would be a mystery they hung on to ❤  When their precious little one was born in early May, they found out together, that it was a little boy.
I packed up and headed to their home in the Cleveland suburbs to photograph their new little family.  I love doing in-home sessions. They are my #1 favorite session to shoot.

If you’re pregnant and expecting in September 2018 or later (yes, 2019 dates included!) please email me today to book your in-home newborn session.  Let’s get your due date on my calendar! wendy@wboycephotos.com

Shillero, party of four {cleveland newborn photographer}

When Emily contacted me, she said she really wanted to shoot a lifestyle session, including their newborn but they didn’t really want a “newborn session”. We talked about what that would mean, and decided to go for an in-home lifestyle family session. I don’t often times get asked to shoot lifestyle and that’s totally fine, but ::wow:: insert al the heart eyes. A lifestyle session is different from a “traditional” family session in that there is nearly no direction, and very little posing. It’s just your family, hanging out, reading together, snuggling. I simply asked for everyone to pile on to the couch and really Big Brother Leo lead the charge. We didn’t ask him to sit-smile-stay. Instead we allowed him to snuggle when he felt like it, play with his cars, or tear through the house having a race with his daddy.

I am immensely proud of these photos, and they tell the story of this fun loving, gorgeous family on their own, so I’ll let them do the rest of the speaking…

Newborn love {cleveland newborn photographer}

nbs-9Ah, new people.  Photographing newborns is my most favorite part of my job. I always travel to my client’s home, so everything is as easy as possible. No packing up, no worrying about diaper explosions, no worries about an uncooperative tiny human or sibling 😉 While I can bring some small studio props with me, I generally prefer to shoot your newest family member, at home- just being. I love getting to use personal pieces- in the above picture, Joey’s mommy (a very talented artist) painted the globe behind him, we shot in his room, with his yellow blanket!

When Cecelia was born, I was able to photograph her big brother snuggling with her by the window, a beautiful smile in her Daddy’s arms, and a precious little coo in her crib! These photos wouldn’t have the same sentimentality had I shot them in studio.

It’s so important to me, to be able to give my clients a glimpse of their tiny baby and his or her role in the family. The newborn phase goes by so quickly, and in such a haze. In the blur of sleep deprivation and hormonal changes, it’s easy to forget the tiny little wisp of hair he had, or the little dimple she had comfort sucking, or the way the puppies always wanted to be so close. To make sure you can get in, book your newborn session no later than your 30th week of pregnancy. (email wendy@wboycephotos.com for availability, currently I can take April, May, and June newborns)inhome-collageStudio photography is *beautiful* and someday, I hope to be able to add the option for studio photos, but for now I’ll happily come to you and photograph your tiny person right at home indoors, or if you have a summer baby outdoors! ❤

Caleb’s newborn session {cleveland newborn photographer}

Sweet Caleb Clay was in a hurry to meet his family! He is healthy and perfect, despite his slightly early start ❤ His early-ish birth also made scheduling his session a bit easier- we had to reschedule his session because NEO was nailed with a pretty nasty storm (though nothing like what my hometown outside of Erie, PA has been dealing with) but we had a bit of wiggle room and the day we shot, he was technically about 37 weeks gestation. Cool, right?

I traveled up to Janel and Greg’s home and we got to work. Caleb, like lots of babies was totally into checking out his surroundings. I can always work with awake babies 🙂 Eventually, after some snuggles and a little snack, Caleb settled in. We were able to use *so* many personal touches, it’s the biggest reason I love going to my client’s home for newborns. The green blanket and hat were made for him, the reindeer hat was a gift, and perhaps most special- the quilt he is snuggled with was made by his Great Grandmother Virginia.  blog-collage

Not only was this quilt made by his Great Grandmother, it was the FIRST quilt she had ever made, many years ago. I brought my own quilt to the session and when Janel saw it, she remarked that she was pretty sure she had a family quilt, somewhere in the house. She took a peek and brought back this beauty and told me the story of it’s maker. Had we not been shooting at home, we wouldn’t have been able to use this piece of family history! ccn-43wmccn-63wmccn-68wmCongratulations, Janel and Greg (and kitties Kevin and Louis). Caleb is absolutely darling ❤ ❤ I can’t wait to watch him grow with you!

When Elise was born {Cleveland Newborn Photographer}

This is the week of throw-backs! Today’s feature is baby Elise ❤ Elise was born in March, so I headed down to her family for her in-home newborn session. Shooting in my client’s home is always the easiest for them- no packing up anything, no worries if baby has a diaper explosion or a little reflux. We also get to relax, and spend time in a place where everyone is most comfortable.

and… I get to meet the family pets ❤ Olive and Henry made this shoot so special. Olive had to make sure the basket was safe for her new human!

All those small details… you forget sometimes how tiny their ear was, or how they puckered their little lips, the curve of a chubby cheek ❤ You forget how their skin was so new, and soft… You never forget the work it took to grow them, but sometimes you forget those itty bitty details.

I get to see Elise in just a few weeks for her six month milestone session and I cannot wait to see how much she’s changed! I’m booking November and early 2018 newborns and milestone sessions 😀 If you know someone expecting, send them my way; when they book their session you’ll both earn some fun freebies!

When Madison turned 4 {Brunswick child photographer}

I’ve been photographing Madison “Mads” since she was about 8 months old. She was as full of spunk then, as she is now! And she is insanely beautiful. Child model material for sure. She is such a perfect mix of her gorgeous mom and her hilarious dad.

MS-18wmMS-13wmMS-15wm

She’s pony obsessed like all four year old girls should be, and has been for at least a year. During her 3yr photo session, she brought one of her ponies with her, and she showed me her pony hooves. It was awesome.

MS-46wm
The pony love hit hard during Madison’s 3yr milestone session!

She’s also into her pretties; her necklace, bracelet, and dainty painted nails…

She’s a big sister now, too! Mason had his newborn session back in December and soon, he’ll have his very own cake smash just like Mads had, three full years ago ❤
